Just 9 days after the German Navy missile boat flotilla left London the next naval visitor arrived on the Thames.
This again is a vessel of the German Navy but this time it is the FGS Sachsen F219 which is the lead vessel of 3 ship class of air-defense frigates – a slightly older design than HMS Defender or ESPS Méndez Núñez but they all carry out the primary mission of anti-air warfare.
The Sachsen-class are based on the Brandenburg class Frigates and incorporate more stealth features and improved sensors.
She is armed with a 76mm main gun, a vertical launch missile system and two RAM launchers along with a number of close-in defence cannon and machine guns. Interestingly on this occasion she was fitted with the Harpoon missile launcher cradles but not with the actual launch tubes.
In addition she also can operate either two Lynx or NH90 helicopters although none were visible as she passed North Woolwich on her way to West India Dock.
