Sugar ships – keeping Silvertown sweet

This post features the ships that have visited the Thames Refinery wharf located on the River Thames at Silvertown, East London in recent years.

The wharf serves the main Tate & Lyle Sugar manufacturing site and most vessels are used to bring in raw sugar cane but a small number of exports of palletised sugar products also used to be supported by this wharf but that ended in January 2019.

The post consists of a list of vessels known to have visited in chronological order by year that they visited the Thames Refinery wharf along with a photo where available.

Some vessels make regular visits and some have changed owners and / or name between visits – if anyone has information about missing vessels please feel free to leave a comment.

A video of a ship arriving on berth can be seen here and additional, higher resolution, photographs can be seen here.

From 1963 to 1970 i shipped out of the Victoria Dock and also did several voyages from and to Tate and Lyles riverside berth with sugar from various places depending on the season. I was a deck hand. I was devastated first time i saw the desolation of empty docks and dereliction of the infastructure. i live in Bedfordshire so never went back after 1970 till the 80,s. Its now a world away from what i knew but have to say they have transformed the whole area magnificently so far. still a ways to go on the south side of the victoria dock by the mills and the old graving dock area, hope i live long enough to see the final result. Nice to know the lock is still being used. The biggest ship ever to use that lock was the Mauretania in 1939. Cheers.

Hi Colin, thanks for your message and great to hear from someone that worked in the area. As you say, much has changed and is still changing – the empty areas around the Millennium Mills will soon be a mix of housing and retail but most of Pontoon Dock will be filled in. Thanks again. Andrew

Hi Simon, thanks for visiting the blog and glad you found the information of interest.

With regards to the origin of the loads of the vessels this information can be found in the various public vessel tracking websites but for casual users these only cover a limited historical period.

I do often Tweet about the arrivals and do note origins where possible – the loads come in from the South Pacific, Central America, Brazil and South Africa mainly.

For a more complete historical list of port of origin information a request would have to be made to either the Port of London Authority, Tate & Lyle Sugars or to subscribe to (or find someone who is) a maritime information service.

      Regards, Andrew
